Thousands of Liberians were killed in two separate civil wars that lasted more than ten years. Ghana opened a camp in the central part of the country to provide refuge for those who fled the war.

Although majority of the Liberians have been repatriated, some inter-married with Ghanaians and have families, making Ghana their home country.
