Former Zimbabwean first lady, Grace Mugabe is to be questioned by police in the coming weeks as part of ongoing investigations into an ivory-smuggling deal.
Mrs. Mugabe is accused of arranging for the smuggling ivory to China, the United Arab Emirates and the United States, and the police say a chance to question her would be vital to their investigation.
A state-run newspaper, The Herald newspaper on Friday quoted a police source as saying that “We are closing in with our investigations”.
“We have also picked up and questioned several suspects whom we believe are linked to the case.”
Grace Mugabe is accused of ordering state officials at the Zimbabwe parks to grant her permits to export millions of dollars of ivory as gifts to foreign leaders, but the ivory was diverted to black markets.
Mrs. Mugabe was believed to have had an eye for the country’s presidency, an ambition that was curtailed by a military takeover and subsequent exit from power of her husband, Robert Mugabe last year.
A PhD she acquired from the University of Zimbabwe became controversial this year after the anti-graft agency of Zimbabwe arrested some educational officials over the matter.
