A private lobby group in South Africa, AfriForum has said it intends prosecuting leader of the opposition Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) Julius Malema on charges of fraud and corruption.
The group’s head of prosecution, Gerrie Nel said on Thursday that Malema’s prosecution would be undertaken privately.
Malema is facing these fraud and corruption charges in relation to a 2012 case in which he was found by a former public protector Thuli Madonsela to have “improperly benefited” from a tender awarded by the Limpopo Roads department to On-Point Engineering.
The EFF leader owns the On-Point Engineering Company.
The said case against Malema and his former business partner, Lesiba Gwangwa, was struck out in 2015 and Nel claims that happened because the accused was sick. He has questioned why the case was never re-instated.
The former private prosecutor, Gerrie Nel has said that he has enough evidence to prove that Malema has recovered from his illness and the need for the case to be re-instated.
He said the aim of AfriForum is for fair prosecution and not for political reason.
Malema has reacted to the news of facing prosecution by tweeting that he is ready to face AfriForum in court.

Julius Malema has been very vocal on corruption in public sector in South Africa and has constantly called for the impeachment of the former president Jacob Zuma whom he accused of being corrupt.
