Officials in Rwanda have confirmed that heavy rains have caused major landslides in parts of the country resulting in the death of eighteen people on Monday.

Rwanda’s ministry in charge of disaster management said on Twitter that “Eighteen people passed on due to disasters caused by heavy rains in the night of 23rd April.”

Giving details of the deaths officials said seven people died in Rwanda’s north, eight in the capital Kigali and three in Gatsibo in the east.

79 houses and 56 hectares of crops were also destroyed by the rains, but officials have said that assessment of the extent of damage from the heavy rain is still ongoing.
