Ghana’s President Nana Akufo-Addo on Thursday sacked the Chairperson of the country’s Electoral Commission Charlotte Osei.

Two other deputies of the chairperson were also sacked by the President.

A statement from Ghana’s Presidency said the electoral commission boss and her two deputies were sacked “on the basis of stated misbehavior and incompetence”.

Charlotte Osei during her tenure also had issues with her two deputies. Their frosty relationship some analysts say affected the running of the commission.

Moves for dismissal

The dismissal of Charlotte Osei is coming months after some employees of the Electoral Commission petitioned the president.

The employees claimed their boss among others has brought the “Commission’s name into disrepute. ”

The petition was submitted to the President last year requiring further investigation into the alleged misconduct against her.

A committee was set up by Ghana’s Chief Justice to probe the allegations further. The committee has now recommended for the removal of the EC boss.

Who is Charlotte Osei

She was appointed by the former President John Mahama ahead of the 2016 general elections.

Despite concerns about her style of leadership at the election management body, she was able to oversee a peaceful and credible election.

The election was won by the current ruling party while in opposition despite allegations of she conspiring to rig the polls for John Mahama.

Reactions

There have been many reactions on social media about Charlotte Osei’s sacking.
