Some Ugandan lawmakers are not giving up on preventing President Yoweri Museveni from potentially seeking re-election.

The legislators have petitioned the country’s supreme court to overturn a lower court decision in July allowing Mr. Museveni to seek re-election.

In December last year, the Parliament with majority MPs from the ruing party voted to scrap an age limit of 75 for presidential candidates.

An earlier challenge to the said amendment at the constitutional court was rejected with critics of President Museveni fearing he intends seeking re-election.

The original law would have ruled out the 73-year-old Museveni from standing in the 2021 elections. Museveni who have been over 75 year by then, disqualifying him. He has been in power since 1986.

Now a group of MPs wants to push further for the Supreme Court to bar Museveni from seeking re-election.

Lawyer for the MPs, Ladislaus Rwakafuzi, told Reuters that the group filed an appeal against the earlier lower court’s ruling on Tuesday.

“We are dissatisfied with the verdict. We don’t think they evaluated the evidence properly. Hopefully the supreme court will agree with our position,” he said.

Rwakafuzi adds that “You cannot amend the constitution without involving the people.”
