Militants have attacked a community in northeast Nigeria with many feared dead. They attacked the town of Gudumbali, according to Reuters.

Reuters reports that the attack has been confirmed by two residents and a vigilante on Saturday.

The militants are reported to have struck Gudumbali in Borno state on Friday. They had worn military uniforms to launch the attack, according to witnesses.

A resident was quoted as saying that “Many civilians lost their lives, we don’t have casualty figures for now. Thousand of people fled their homes.”

A vigilante is also quoted as saying that the militants “came towards the town shooting sporadically”.

“They were saying if you know you’re an innocent person just leave the town, our target is not you, or if you wish to stay with us, it’s no matter, you can stay with us,” the vigilante added.

Gudumbali was a town that suffered massive attacks from Boko Haram militants months ago. Residents fled the town but were asked to return by the government.

The army has struggled to contain attacks on this town and many parts of northeastern Nigeria from militants.
