15 people have been killed in an attack carried out by Boko Haram militants in Nigeria’s northeastern state of Borno.

The attack took place on Wednesday night, local media reports. In one of the villages, eye witnesses say an Imam was set ablaze with four of his family members.

Punch reports that the number of deaths could increase as the impact of the attack is still being investigated.

Nigeria’s military said in a statement that the militants fled when soldiers approached some of the villages attacked.

Beyond the deaths, several homes and property were set ablaze by the militants.

Nigeria continues to struggle to contain the activities of Boko Haram as the group wrecks havoc across the country.

There have been reports of the military defeating the militants, but news of attacks in parts of the country still persist.

Millions have been displaced and thousands killed since the group started its insurgency in 2009.
