Parliamentary workers in Nigeria on Monday started a four-day strike to push for better working conditions.
The workers who are part of the Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria (PASAN) blocked the compound of the national assembly.
They also prevented people from entering the national assembly amid the deployment of heavy security. The decision to embark on was taken on Friday after series of agitations.
Implications of the strike
The strike could however disrupt parliamentary activities in Nigeria on Wednesday, the day, President Muhammadu Buhari is expected to be in the national assembly.
The Nigerian leader is to present the 2019 Appropriation bill to the joint national assembly on Wednesday.
The Chairman of the association, Bature Mohammed, in a statement said the strike would run till December 20.
Workers demand
The workers are pushing for a new condition of service for members. They also want promotion and payment of 28 per cent increment in salary contained in the 2018 budget.
The aggrieved workers on December, 4 disrupted activities of the national assembly by staging a protest over unpaid salaries and allowances.
They even prevented lawmakers from accessing the chamber. The workers accused the leadership of the parliament of ignoring their demands.
