An arrest warrant has been issued for Zimbabwe’s former first lady Grace Mugabe. South Africa issued the warrant over an alleged assault case involving Mrs. Mugabe.

Police officials in South Africa said on Wednesday that the warrant was issued over an incident which occurred in the upmarket district of Johannesburg last year.

The assault victim, model Gabriella Engels was allegedly assaulted by Mrs. Mugabe for partying with her sons, Robert jnr and Bellarmine Chatunga, who were students in South Africa.

They young men are known for notoriety and lavish lifestyles.

At the time of the incident, Mrs. Mugabe was still first lady since her husband, Robert was still in power.

The South African government at the time granted Grace Mugabe diplomatic immunity allowing her to flee to Zimbabwe before she could be arrested.

But that immunity was overturned by a South African court this year after the alleged victim opposed the decision.

The victim’s family had claimed that Mrs. Mugabe wanted to pay them to drop the assault charges. The family reportedly turned down the request and wanted justice to be served

Police spokesperson, Vishnu Naidoo said “I can confirm that a warrant for the arrest of Grace Mugabe was issued last Thursday.”

South African police are now hoping Interpol’s could help them to enforce the warrant.
