A gorilla in a Nigerian zoo has been accused of eating $19,400 (7m naira).

Officials say the said amount of money had gone missing in northern Nigeria.

Police officials, according to a BBC reporting are now investigating how the money went missing.

The money was supposed to be five days’ worth of gate fees at the Kano Zoo.

An official of the Zoo’s finance department told a radio station in Nigeria that a gorilla sneaked into the office, took the money and swallowed it.

The Managing Director of Kano Zoo, Umar Kashekobo is quoted by the BBC as saying that “Police are investigating what happened – all I can say is money is missing.”

Kano Police spokesperson Abdullahi Kiyawa revealed that 10 people had so far been arrested for interrogation.

Police are also probing why such a huge amount of money was kept at the office in the Zoo.

This is not the first time officials in Nigeria had blamed animals for stealing money.

Last year Nigerians were shocked by a revelation from a sales clerk who claimed $100,000 had been swallowed by a snake.

The sales clerk was suspended after making this claim to auditors. She was was working with the Nigerian examination board in charge of collection of exam fees.

The clerk, Philomena Chieshe had said that that the said snake ate 36m naira during a questioning session.
