A car bomb attack in Somalia’s capital Mogadishu has killed at least 20 people during morning rush hour.

Officials say the blast took place at a checkpoint at a busy intersection in Mogadishu.

A police officer Ibrahim Mohamed told the AFP that “The blast was devastating, and I could confirm more than 20 civilians killed, there were many more wounded.”

An eye witness also said “All I could see was scattered dead bodies … amid the blast and some of them burned beyond recognition.”

Although no group has claimed responsibility for the bomb just yet, such attacks are often carried out by militant group al-Shabab.

A former internal security minister who is also a Somali MP, Mohamed Abdirizak said the death toll could be higher.

He said “May Allah have mercy on the victims of this barbaric attack.”
