Prosecutors in Lesotho have said that they have evidence that the country’s ex-prime minister, Thomas Thabane paid assassins to kill his own former wife.

The police made this damning claim in a court affidavit, stating that Thabane was supported in this act by his current wife Maesaiah Thabane.

Lipolelo Thabane, the former wife of the former prime minister was shot dead on the eve of Mr Thabane’s swearing in as prime minister in 2017.

The court papers showed that the former prime minister identified the home of his estranged wife to the hit-men.

According to police Mr. Thabane and his current wife agreed to pay the alleged killers a total of $180,000.

The money was to be paid in instalments with a down-payment of $24,000 already been paid.

Police say one of the hit-men is willing to testify as key witness for the state.

Maesaiah Thabane has been arrested and remains in custody since last week as she seeks bail but the police statement has filed documents at the Maseru High Court seeking to oppose her bail application.

Maesaiah has been charged with murder but has pleaded not guilty to the charges and her lawyers want her released on bail.

Ex-prime minister not charged

Prosecutors although made the damning claim in their documents in court are yet to charge the ex-prime minister.

Mr Thabane has already denied any involvement in the murder of his ex-wife but was forced to step down last month.

Before Lipolelo Thabane was killed she won a court battle to continue in her role as the rightful first lady while undergoing divorce proceedings.

But police say Mr and Mrs Thabane wanted his former wife, Lipolelo, dead, in-order for Maesaiah to become the first lady.

Thomas and Lipolelo Thabane as a couple got involved in a very bitter divorce proceedings before her death.
