The vice president of the Gambia has tested positive for the Coronavirus according to a statement from the government.
“The Office of the President informs the public that Her Excellency, the Vice President, Dr. Isatou Touray has been tested positive for COVID-19” the released read.
No further details about 65-year old Touray’s condition who was named vice president last year was given in the statement.
The government said to prevent further spread of the virus the president Adama Barrow has also gone into self isolation for a period of 14 days.
The government of the Gambia announce last Friday that wearing of face mask is now compulsory in the public.
“The public is advised to properly use face masks, maintain regular hand washing and social distancing in the fight against the virus,” the statement said adding that people should “Stay at home and stay safe.”
Gambia has recorded 326 cases with 246 currently active receiving treatment. Eight deaths have been recorded as well.
