Malawi’s Vice President Saulosi Klaus Chilima is to run for President in 2019.
Saulosi Klaus Chilima last month quit the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP).
He said there was high level of corruption and nepotism within the party.
Chilima announced his intention on Wednesday, signalling his readiness to challenge his own boss, Peter Mutharika.
Peter Mutharika is currently facing corruption allegations which he has described as ‘fake news’.
Chilima told local media that “I am ready to contest. If we follow a process that is transparent and democratic, I will present myself as a candidate.”
“In the next 10 days, a decision will be made on whether I will go it alone as an independent candidate or as part of an alliance or grand coalition.” Chilima said told Zodiak Broadcasting Station.
Malawi elections
Malawi will hold its general elections next year with the incumbent, Mutharika accepting his party’s nomination to seek re-election.
Chilima says he has received calls from various stakeholders to run for President.
Mutharika under pressure
President Mutharika is under intense pressure to resign over corruption allegations.
He is accused of receiving some $195 000 from a contractor who supplies food rations to the police command.
Mutharika became President in 2014 taking over from his predecessor Joyce Banda.
Banda herself was also accused of corruption forcing her to flee the country only to return this year.
She intends contesting for President in next year’s elections.
