Nigerians living in Ghana are outraged over the demolishing of some apartments at the residence of the High Commissioner.

Armed men supervised the demolishing of the apartments by bulldozers. Embassy officials say the men threatened to shoot if they interfered in their operations.

Some Nigerians in Ghana have besieged the premises of the High Commission to condemn the development and demand action from the Ghanaian authorities.

Some of the angry Nigerians carried placards, screaming that Nigerians Lives Matter.  They were stopped by the Police from entering the premises.

Nigeria’s Foreign Affairs Minister Geoffrey Onyeama has condemned what he says is the illegal demolition of a facility at Nigeria’s High Commission in Ghana.

“We strongly condemn two outrageous criminal attacks in Accra, #Ghana, on a residential building in our diplomatic premises by unknown persons in which a bulldozer was used to demolish the building.

We are engaging the Ghanaian Government and demand urgent action to find the perpetrators and provide adequate protection for Nigerians and their property in Ghana,” the foreign affairs minister tweeted.

The Ghana Government has also started investigations into the demolishing exercise since it breeches the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations (VCDR, 1961).

In a statement the government said the investigations would unravel the facts of the matter for the perpetrators to be brought to book.

“It has come to the attention of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration that unidentified individuals had allegedly breached the premises of the Nigerian High Commission in Accra and demolished its property under construction around 10:30am, on Friday June 19, 2020.

Accordingly, investigations are ongoing to unravel the facts of the matter and bring the perpetrators to book. Meanwhile, the government of Ghana has beefed up security at the said facility and the situation is under control” it said.

It reassured the Diplomatic Community, particularly the Nigeria High Commission, that Ghana remained a law-abiding country, adding that, it was “committed to upholding the principle of the rule of law, where due process is followed at all times.

The Government of Ghana also said it will not relent on its primary obligation to guarantee the safety of Members of the Diplomatic Corps in Ghana.
