Nigerian woman ‘put on sale’ in Lebanon refuses to return home after rescue

The 30 year old Nigerian who was advertised for sale on Facebook in Lebanon has reportedly refused to return home.

The woman was rescued by the Lebanese authorities after she was advertised for sale at $1,000.

She has since been taken to the Nigerian embassy in Beirut. A public outcry over the incident also led to the arrest of the suspect for prosecution.

The Nigeria’s Diaspora Commission begun the process to send the woman back home.

But the Head of the Commission Abike Dabiri-Erewa has revealed that the victim is opposong the move.

“Even the Secretary to the State Government (SSG) of Oyo State, where she is from, spoke to her.

We just hope that Nigerians going to work in Lebanon will be properly treated and not treated as slaves,” Ms Dabiri-Erewa said.

Following the outrage over the incident the Lebanese embassy has stopped issuing visas to Nigerians seeking domestic work in Lebanon.

69 Nigerians have since been rescued from Lebanon and sent home.

They are currently in quarantine in compliance with provisions to curb the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Gulf nation is well known for the abuse of migrant workers with two workers die per week according to estimates. Most deaths are through suicide or while attempting to escape.

In Lebanon domestic workers are legally bound to their employers through the country’s notorious kafala system.

The system only allows such workers to end their contracts with the consent of employers.
