Germany hosts G20-led summit for Africa leaders

More than a dozen African leaders are meeting in Germany this week for the G20 Compact with Africa conference, ahead of the G20 summit also to be held in Germany.

This week’s meeting with the African leaders hopes to focus on bolstering private investment in Africa, highlighting the interest in the continent from the West.

The summit in Berlin will be hosted by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, according to German government officials.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, French President Emmanuel Macron and Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte will also be among those attending.

African has become a major talking point for the rest of the world with Europe and the United States jostling with Russia and China for geopolitical influence.

Scholz has visited Africa several times ahead of this summit deepening his country’s interest in the continent.

Major focus for Germany in Africa has been renewable energy production and reducing illegal migration.

The Compact with Africa, which was created in 2017 under the German G20 presidency, was to bring some reforms to African economies.

The member countries of the G20 Compact are Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt, Senegal, Guinea, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Togo, Benin, Burkina Faso, Rwanda, Democratic Republic of Congo and Ethiopia.

German trade with Africa was 60 billion euros ($65.4 billion) last year. Nearly two thirds of German companies want to expand their business in Africa, according to a study by KPMG and the German-African Business Association.
