Local media in South Africa is reporting that President Jacob Zuma has survived a motion of no confidence by his own party.

An Afrikaans-language daily, the Beeld, reported on Tuesday that no formal vote took place, but it didn’t name its sources.

The three-day long conference of the ANC’s national executive committee meeting in Pretoria ended late on Monday with the party leadership expected to hold a media briefing  on Tuesday.

The ANC’s national executive committee (NEC) extended its scheduled meeting on Monday, after Tourism Minister Derek Hanekom proposed the motion of no-confidence on Saturday.

Committee members engaged in in a “fiery and fierce” debate over whether a secret ballot should be used to decide the no-confidence motion.

In a statement on Sunday, the ANC did not give a reason for the extension of the meeting.

Zuma’s presidency has been plagued by scandal and the nation’s anti-graft watchdog this month asked for a judge to investigate alleged influence-peddling by a wealthy family Zuma has called his friends.

Zuma has denied any wrongdoing.
