Responsibility for Wednesday’s car bomb attack on a Mali military base has been claimed by the group Al-Qaeda.
The militant group’s North African affiliate said a group linked to it carried out the suicide attack that killed at least 50 people.
The incident occurred in northern Mali city of Gao after a car with explosives detonated in a facility some soldiers and rival armed groups are being housed in.
These soldiers and armed groups have been engaging in mixed patrols in line with a U.N.-brokered peace accord to quell violence in the city.
The Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) in a statement said the attack was to punish rebel groups co-operating with France.
Mali’s President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita has declared three days of national mourning over the incident.
