Nigeria’s vice president, Yemi Osinbajo has taken over as acting president.

A statement from a government spokesman said President Muhammadu Buhari will on Thursday travel to Britain for medical checks.

The Nigerian leader is expected to return and resume his official duties on February 6.

A letter to this effect was sent to Nigeria’s upper house of parliament signaling that Mr. Buhari is embarking on a medical leave.

His spokesman Femi Adesina said in the statement that “While away the vice president, Yemi Osinbajo, will perform the functions of the Office of the President,”
