The World Health Organization (W.H.O) has explained how some nine people died mysteriously in Liberia. Eight others also fell sick after they were reported to have returned from the funeral of a religious leader.
On Friday an official of the WHO, Fadela Chaib told a briefing in Geneva that “It seems all of these people were attending the funeral of a religious leader.”
Liberian officials have already ruled out Ebola as the possible cause of the deaths and illness.
Chaib said “They have taken samples from the dead bodies, and all the samples came back negative for Ebola. They will be looking of course for other haemorrhagic fevers and for bacteria, if there was any common exposure to water contamination or food contamination.”
Liberia and other West African countries reeled under Ebola for two years resulting in deaths and a breakdown of the health systems of the affected countries.
According to the WHO the eight people who fell sick are still under observation in hospital in Sinoe county with symptoms including fever, vomiting and diarrhoea.
Chaib further said that “WHO, CDC (U.S. Centers for Disease Control) and other partners are providing technical and logistical support to the rapid response team that has been activated at district and county levels.”
