Renowned South African writer Schoeman commits suicide

The popular South African author Karel Schoeman has been reported dead. His lawyers confirmed on Wednesday that he died by committing suicide.

Local media reports also said that Schoeman died at home in Bloemfontein. He was 77.

Schoeman was a prolific author who won several prizes for his work.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Schoeman’s lawyer,  Carl van Rensburg denied reports that his client had stopped taking food and water.

“He found another way to end his life.

“I presume some sort of medication must have been involved,” he said.

Mr. Schoeman is reported to have left a letter behind.

According to the Daily Times Live which quoted the letter, Mr. Schoeman said he did not want to be old and become a burden to anyone.

Schoeman wrote 19 novels and numerous works of history primarily in Afrikaans, although several of his non-fiction books were originally written in English.
