23-year old Kenyan student who campaigned on foot wins MP seat

A 23 year old Kenyan has been declared winner of his constituency’s parliamentary election in the Kenya general elections.

The university student who stood as an independent candidate for Igembe South was declared the newly elected MP on Thursday.

John Paul Mwirigi who is at Mt Kenya University beat other seasoned politicians in the contest.

The Daily Nation reported that Mr Mwirigi, who could be the youngest elected MP following this result.

He reportedly campaigned on foot since he could not afford proper means of transportation.

He was quoted by the Daily Nation to have said that “I had a dream where I was tabling a motion in Parliament while I was in Form three. That is when I started asking my fellow students to start campaigning for me since I would need their vote in 2017.

Mwirigi said “I have held leadership positions in school and in my neighbourhood.”

Mwigiri who is the sixth born in a family of eight still lives in a family house and said his first priority would be to support agribusiness activities, promote entrepreneurship and nurturing talents.

“Since I come from a humble background, I understand the issues that affect the residents. My key agenda will be to transform the lives of the people,” said the newly elected young MP told Daily Nation.

Local media reported that residents in the Mwigiri’s community decided to vote for him since he better understood their problems and can help address them.
