At least 50 people have been killed in days of violent clashes along the border of Ethiopia’s Oromiya and Somali regions, according to officials.

More than 50,000 people have also been reported to have been displaced as government of Ethiopia sends military forces to the area to contain the violence.

Reuters reported that on Sunday, Prime Minister of Ethiopia Hailemariam Desalegn said soldiers deployed to the region to deal with the violence are to disarm residents and safeguard the regions.

Both sides have blamed each other for the violence with the President of Oromiya province, Lema Megersa, telling journalists on Sunday that “It is not just deaths that occurred. More than 50,000 people were displaced from their homes.”

He called for “Those responsible” to “be held to account.”
