The once powerful leader of the West African nation of The Gambia, Yahya Jammeh is reported to be very isolated in Equatorial Guinea where he is currently living in exile.
The former Gambian leader was forced into exile after refusing to accept the outcome of the 2016 presidential election which he lost to current president, Adama Barrow.
Many journalists have made attempts to interview Mr. Jammeh but without success. According to the SMBC News, a journalist in Equatorial Guinea who had made several attempts to interview Jammeh, told The Standard newspaper that the former leader is isolated on an island in Mongoba, Equatorial Guinea.
The compound according to the journalist is very fortified and well protected making access to Mr. Jammeh extremely difficult.
“My sources within the Ministry of the Interior and National Security have confirmed to me that the former dictator is constantly monitored and is not even allowed to move out of his government allocated residence without prior notice,” the journalist told The Standard.
The journalist further said that Mr. Jammeh “is confined to either his house or the farm that the government allocated him where he is farming cacao, plantain, and other crops.”
Mr. Jammeh was last seen in public when he and President of Equatorial Guinea, Theodore Obiang, were seen on a farm.
Pictures circulated on social media showing Mr. Jammeh in the company of some individuals including the President of Equatorial Guinea, Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo on a farm.
Mr. Jammeh has been accused by the current Gambian government of misappropriation of funds. Public hearings are taking place to investigate happenings under the previous Jammeh regime including reports of human rights abuses.
