Officials in Egypt have confirmed the death of four people including a police officer after a gunman opened fire on a church south of Cairo on Friday.

The attacker was however shot dead by police officers, according to state media.

Five security staff at the church were also wounded in the attack when the gunman stormed the building.

Attacks on Christians usually in church buildings have been rife this year in Egypt with most of them undertaken by groups affiliated to Islamic State.

10 percent of Egypt’s population comes from the Coptic Christians making it the largest minority religious group the country’s 93 million people.
