The president-elect of Liberia, George Weah has declared his intention to fight corruption and rebuild the country’s economy in his first major speech since his election victory.

Liberia recovered from decades of civil war over 12 years ago but has still struggled under Ellen Johnson Sirleaf to make major strides.

George Weah has been criticized over his political career of lacking the knowledge, experience to govern the country and propel its growth.

He beat current vice president, Joseph Boakai in Tuesday’s presidential run-off securing over 60 percent of votes as he prepares to be sworn in next month as the country’s 25th President.

Weah has promised to assemble his cabinet in the coming days even before his inauguration as he declared “To investors, we say Liberia is open for business”.

The former soccer star has also asked Liberians abroad to return home saying “We are not enemies,” he said in comments addressed to his political opponents. “We welcome you with open arms as we try to build our country.”

“Two days ago the world watched me cry. I did not cry because I won. I cried that many people lost their lives in the struggle for change.”
