A crocodile on Sunday attacked a pastor in Ethiopia eating him up while baptizing his congregants.

The incident occurred at Lake Abaya in Ethiopia during the baptism session with more than 80 people attending.

A local resident was quoted by the BBC as saying that the Pastor, Docho Eshete “baptised the first person and he passed on to another one.”

“All of a sudden, a crocodile jumped out of the lake and grabbed the pastor pushing aside the person he was baptising,” the resident added.

According to, a news website in Ethiopia the church members stood helplessly in tears while the crocodile ate him.

The pastor’s hands, legs and back were devoured by the crocodile while efforts to save him were fruitless.

A police officer, Eiwnetu Kanko told the BBC that residents and fishermen “only managed to get his dead body. They were unable to save him”.

Many christian sects baptize congregants in rivers as part of a ritual meant to signify their repentance towards God.
