The parliament of the Democratic Republic of Congo has passed a law to provide financial privileges for former presidents.

The move is considered an act aimed at encouraging President Joseph Kabila to step down ahead of general elections in December.

The new law passed on Wednesday provides financial benefits for former presidents. A pension, housing, security, health care and a diplomatic passport also come with the package.

The Congolese constitution also provides some level of legal immunity for former Presidents.

President Kabila has refused to step down sparking violent reactions after his tenure ended in 2016.

He is barred by the constitutional from seeking reelection. His refusal to publicly say he wont be running has created some level of tension.

The country’s prime minister, Bruno Tshibala said Kabila will not run, which is good news for many.

It appears everything is being done to ensure that Joseph Kabila exits power to end the violence reactions to his continues stay in power.

December’s elections will be crucial for DR Congo as tensions are high with opposition figures accusing Kabila of wanting to prolong his stay in power.

Joseph Kabila took over as president from his father Laurent who was assassinated in 2001.
