Our South African airports are making us proud on the African content after big wins at the 2018 Airports Council International (ACI) Airport Service Quality (ASQ) Awards.
Durban’s King Shaka International Airport got top marks in the category for ‘Best Airport by Size and Region: 5-15 million passengers in Africa’.
Three other South African airports also came out in tops in the category ‘Best Airport by Size and Region category in Africa (under 2 million passengers)’ – Port Elizabeth International Airport, Kimberley Airport and Upington International Airport.
Airports Company South Africa’s (ACSA) general manager for King Shaka International Airport, Terence Delomoney, lauded the accomplishments.
“We are very pleased that King Shaka International Airport has once again been named a winner in the global Airports Council International Awards, as voted for by passengers who used the airport in 2018.
“We have seen encouraging growth in our passenger arrival and departure numbers; our airport has achieved almost six million passengers per annum in 2018; we have expanded our route development with global airlines and we continue to work with global stakeholders to offer passengers and travellers access to the world of new opportunities available along Durban, Dolphin Coast and KZN.”
The ASQ Awards determines their winners through surveys conducted with passengers while they are at the airport. Around 650 000 passengers per year are interviewed prior to boarding their flight and asked to rate their satisfaction with the airport’s services.
The ranking system by which ASQ Awards are given was also relaunched earlier this year, acknowledging the top 20% by region and size instead of just the top three like previous years – resulting in multiple winners in a category.
