The host of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, Egypt have been knocked out of the competition by South Africa.

South Africa beat Egypt, one of the teams considered favourite for the title on Saturday by one goal to nil.

The fully parked Cairo International Stadium was stunned into silence when Thembinkosi Lorch during a counter-attack slots the ball into the corner.

The hosts’ best chance fell to Mahmoud Trezeguet, but he could only fire his shot straight at Ronwen Williams.

South Africa will now meet Nigeria who earlier on Saturday knocked out the holders, Cameroon.

Both teams will be playing in the quarter finals seeking a place in the semi-finals.

Cameroon lost to rivals Nigeria by two goals to three in an entertaining encounter in Alexandria on Saturday.

The South African coach Stuart Baxter on twitter said “I serve a living God” as he referred to people who doubted his team’s chances of beating Egypt.
