A court in Eastern Cape, in South Africa has issued an arrest warrant for leader of the opposition Economic Freedom Fighters, Julius Malema.
The warrant was issued after Malema failed to appear in the East London magistrates court on Monday.
He is facing a charge related to the discharge of a firearm in a public space after allegedly discharged the rifle during a rally in Mdantsane in 2018.
South Africa’s National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) in November last year said Julius Malema was facing five counts, including the unlawful possession of a firearm.
Other four counts cover unlawful possession of ammunition, discharge of a firearm in a public place, failure to take reasonable precaution to person or property and reckless endangerment to a person or property.
Hearing was postponed to Monday February 24, 2020 for the state to make its case against Malema.
Malema has always described the case against him as a mockery of the system.
Some legal experts say Malema could face up to 15 years in jail if found guilty of the firearms charges.
