Covid-19 cases hit over 11,282 in Africa with 1,354 recoveries

Coronavirus cases in Africa have now reached over 11,000 across 52 countries as at April 9, 2020, according to health experts.

The over 11,282 cases recorded so far have come with 1,354 recoveries and 558 deaths.

South Africa, Egypt, Algeria and Morocco have all recorded over 1,000 cases so far but South Africa tops with more cases at 1,934.

Most of the recoveries have come from two major regions on the continent – north and west, according to latest figures from health experts.

North Africa leads with over 437 recoveries followed closely by West Africa with over 348 recoveries as at April 9, 2020.

These two sub-regions are the only ones with over 100 recoveries with the rest of the continent recording less than 100 recoveries each.


Egypt with over 259 recoveries has the largest number so far as a single country, followed by Burkina Faso with at least 108 recoveries.

Africa’s infection rate is still low compared to other continents but officials are calling for caution to prevent further spread.

Countries in Africa are locking down their cities and extension further restrictions.

Globally however over 1.3 million people have been infected with deaths exceeding 70,000 as at April 9, 2020.
