Tanzania: Citizens to vote with driving licences, passports

Tanzania’s electoral commission has announced that voters with missing identity cards can vote with their driving licences and passports.

The electoral body said this will ensure that voters get the chance to exercise their democratic rights without limitation in next week’s general election.

According to the commission the names of citizens voting with driving licenses and passports should tally with their details in the voters’ register.

In a statement on Twitter the electoral commission said it can guarantee the sanctity of the electoral process.

President John Magufuli, is seeking re-election amid competition from opposition candidate Tundu Lissu.

There have been concerns over the “increased tension” in Tanzania ahead of the general election.

Some foreign missions in Tanzania jave jointly called for a free and fair election in a statement recently.
