A 25-year-old tailor apprentice has been arrested in Ghana’s second biggest city – Kumasi for allegedly killing one of his friends to avoid paying a $40 debt he was due to clear.

The suspect, Emmanuel Boateng has been arrested by the police after he killed the victim who was a second-year student at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in the Ashanti region.

Boateng according to police confessed to committing the crime by luring the deceased to a location after anticipating that he would be asked to pay back the money he owed him.

The suspect is now in police custody, according to the police who say they would soon put him on trial.

A police spokesperson, DSP Godwin Ahianyo, told local media that “the suspect lured the deceased to a nearby [location] and killed him.”

“According to the suspect, he owed the deceased an amount of GH¢300 and couldn’t pay up when he (the deceased) came asking, for which reason he killed him,” Ahianyo added.

The deceased, 22-year-old Nana Kwaku Adu Gyamfi, was found dead in a bush. Police say inspection of the body revealed a swollen neck and “blood oozing from the nostrils”.

The suspect and victim were said to have gone out on the day of the incident, but the deceased did not return home until his dead body was discovered in the bush.

According to the police officer they suspect there is more to the reason for the crime.

“We find the story a little hard to believe because why will he resort to taking his friend’s life over GH¢300 ($40)? We suspect there is more and we are going to ensure we get the full details,” he said.
