Nigerian transgender woman pleads guilty to abusing bank notes

A transgender woman in Nigeria, popularly known as Bobrisky has pleaded guilty to four counts of abusing the the local currency, the naira.

Bobrisky, one of Nigeria’s most popular celebrities appeared at the Federal High Court in Lagos on Friday to respond to charges.

She reportedly threw bank notes in the air at social events to symbolise appreciation, an act that is often done at Nigerian weddings and other celebrations.

Brobisky in March sprayed or threw the naira banknotes at the premiere of Ajakaju, a keenly awaited film by actress and producer Eniola Ajao, at Film One Circle Mall.

The act was captured on video and circulated widely on social media.

According to prosecutors, the act carried out by the woman was an offence. The maximum punishment is six months in jail.

Bobrisky is expected to remain in the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for now.

But her lawyer Ayo Olumofin said his client, Bobrisky was a first-time offender and should be treated as such.

“We have confidence in the court and justice will be done,” he said.
