Ghana’s former finance minister, Ken Ofori-Atta has is wanted by the country’s state prosecutors for several corruption cases he is alleged to have played key roles in.
The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) on Wednesday made a formal declaration of the former minister being a fugitive.
Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng told journalists in Accra that the former minister is a suspect in four high-profile corruption investigations.
Some of those cases relate to the controversial National Cathedral project, Strategic Mobilization Limited (SML), and two other cases.
The Special Prosecutor said Mr. Ofori-Atta must return to Ghana immediately to face questioning.
He also warned that the former minister would be compelled to return to Ghana if he fails to comply with the latest declaration.
Ofori-Atta is reported to have left Ghana for medical treatment, but Agyebeng insisted that the former minister must cooperate with the ongoing probes.
This move by Ghana’s Special Prosecutor is a major development as the country’s new government promises to fight corruption and recover monies lotted by former government appointees.
