Dozens of military personnel and civilians are feared dead after a Sudanese military aircraft crashed into a residential neighbourhood.

Eyewitnesses reported a massive explosion on the outskirts of Khartoum as the plane went down shortly after takeoff from Wadi Seidna military base in northern Omdurman.

Officials have yet to release an official death toll, but military sources estimate that more than 20 people lost their lives in the incident.

While investigations are ongoing, initial reports suggest a possible technical failure as the cause of the crash.

Among the fatalities was Major-General Bahr Ahmed, a high-ranking officer stationed in Khartoum.

Widespread Damage and Rescue Efforts

The impact of the crash caused significant destruction in the surrounding area, damaging homes and leading to power outages.

Emergency responders worked through the night, transporting the injured to local hospitals and extinguishing fires at the crash site.

The Karari Resistance Committee, a grassroots organization involved in humanitarian aid, confirmed that at least ten bodies and multiple injured victims were taken to al-Nao Hospital in Omdurman.

Sudan remains in the grip of a prolonged conflict that erupted in April 2023, driven by a power struggle between military leader Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and Mohamed Hamdan Daglo, commander of the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

As the fighting intensifies, the Sudanese army is pushing forward with a major offensive in central Sudan and Khartoum, escalating tensions in an already volatile region.
