The former President of Zimbabwe, Robert Mugabe has apologized to his former deputy, Joice Mujuru who he sacked four years ago before eventually exiting power last year.

Joice Mujuru was Mugabe’s deputy from 2004 until her dismissal in 2014 and subsequent expulsion from the Zanu PF.

Local media reported that Mugabe met the former vice president at his Harare mansion this week to ask for her forgiveness,

Mujuru’s spokesperson told a private newspaper NewsDay, Gift Nyandoro that “They met and it was at Mugabe’s invitation. One of the reasons was to say sorry for everything that happened,”

Mujuru was sacked from the government and ruling party after a vilified campaign by Mugabe’s wife, the former first lady, Grace Mugabe who accused her of attempts to topple her husband from power.

Local media reported that Mugabe told Mujuru at this week’s meeting that he had been “misinformed” about her and blamed his successor Emmerson Mnangagwa and the new vice president Constantino Chiwenga for that.

“I was misinformed and I decided to call you so that I can say I’m sorry, my daughter, we were misled,” Nyandoro quoted the former president as telling Mujuru.

“I have come to know that all the people who were fighting you are Mnangagwa and Chiwenga. It was a grand plan to get to me and not yourself.” Mugabe said.

Nyandoro said Mujuru forgave Mugabe for sacking her.

The former vice president of Zimbabwe on Thursday was attacked by persons suspected to be members of the ruling Zanu PF.

Local media reported that Mujuru who is now an opposition leader was attacked with stones in Harare while traveling to a party event to address her supporters.

Her party the National People’s Party said its leader and her entourage came under the attack without any provocation.
