The militant group al Shabaab on Tuesday executed five men in public in Somalia accusing them of spying.
Reuters reports that one of al Shabaab’s leaders in the Jubba regions, Mohamed Abu Abdalla confirmed the killings.
He is quoted as saying that “Five of them were publicly shot to death.”
Abdalla said the five were executed “after they admitted espionage before the court.”
He told Reuters that “Awale Ahmed Mohamed, 32 spied for MI6 and he came from Britain to Somalia to establish Islamic State.”
According to Reuters reporting, three of the men killed allegedly spied for the United States and the “fourth spied for the Somali government”.
Al-shabaab for years has been fighting to overthrow the UN-backed government in Somalia.
