Nigerian army helicopter fighting Boko Haram crashes

Nigeria’s army says one of its helicopter’s used in the fight against Boko Haram crashed on Wednesday.

The army says the helicopter was lost in combat while providing air support to troops at Damasak in Northern Borno State of Nigeria.

Nigerian troops continue to battle Boko Haram militants causing havoc in northern Borno. The area has been vulnerable as the militants continue to launch attacks on civilians and military camps.

The spokesperson for the Nigerian Air Force, Air Commodore Ibikunle Daramola, said details of the cause of the crash were still unknown.

“A Nigerian Air Force helicopter was lost in combat while providing close air support to troops of 145 Battalion at Damasak in Northern Borno State. The mission was part of the ongoing counter-insurgency operations in the North-East

“The incident occurred about 7:45 pm on January 2. Details of the cause of the crash are still scanty. As soon as the details of the crash are known, they will be made available to the public,” he said.

Millions have been displaced as a result of Boko Haram attack. Thousands have also died in the process.

The Nigerian army has on several occasions come under attack from the militants and in some instances causing severe damage.

The Buhari led government is under pressure to defeat Boko Haram after promising to do so couple of years ago.
