Kenya has appointed its first female Chief Justice in the person of Lady Justice Martha Karambu Koome.
Her appointment was confirmed by Kenya’s President Uhuru Kenyatta on Wednesday.
She also becomes the country’s third Chief Justice since the new Constitution came into force in 2010.
Kenya’s parliament endorsed Justice Koome for the appointment following her vetting last week.
The approval was sent to President Uhuru Kenyatta for formal appointment.
The 61-year-old career judge and renowned human rights lawyer will now have a major task to mend relations between the judiciary and the executive arm of government.
Last week the High Court issued a scathing ruling that scuttled an initiative, led by President Kenyatta, to change the constitution.
The judges ruled the initiative was “illegal” and questioned Mr Kenyatta’s integrity.
While appearing for her televised interview session for the role, Ms Koome said she would reach out to Mr Kenyatta to ensure they have a good working relationship.
“The Constitution guarantees and protects the independence of the judiciary. No one will threaten or direct how the courts will determine cases. We shall not be under any direction of any person or authority,” Justice Koome said during her vetting.
