Ghana‘s ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) has elected the Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia as its candidate for next year’s presidential election.
He won 61% of votes cast in the second stage of the primary.
It would be the first time the party is picking a candidate from the northern part of the country to lead it into a general election.
He is also the first Muslim to lead a major party in Ghana since 1992.
In his acceptance speech, Bawumia promised to rebuild the economy if elected as president.
“I want to lead a nation that improves and unleashes the talents of our youth and offers good jobs with good pay and sustainable growth with macroeconomic discipline,” he said.
Bawumia, the 60-year-old economist had already served as vice president to current president Nana Addo Akufo-Addo since 2017.
Akufo-Addo is set to step down in January 2025 after serving the constitutionally mandated eight years.
Bawumia would now go head to head with Ghana’s former president John Mahama who is from the opposition, National Democratic Congress.
“We know that the NPP is the only party that can transform Ghana. The NPP will enter 2024 united and energised,” he said.
No ruling parties in Ghana has ever won more than two consecutive terms. Bawumia would be attempting to do that for his party in 2024.
