South Africa’s national and provincial elections are now planned for May 29.
Voters will be electing a new National Assembly as well as the provincial legislature in each of the country’s nine provinces.
Once that is done, the National Assembly will then elect a president. There are 400 seats in parliament and are allocated based on the percentage of votes they receive in the election.
This year’s election could be the most competitive since the end of the apartheid system.
Cyril Ramaphosa, 71, is seeking a second term as president. He took over from Jacob Zuma in 2018.
“The 2024 elections coincide with South Africa’s celebration of 30 years of freedom and democracy,” Ramaphosa’s office said in a statement.
There are many analysts who are predicting that the governing African National Congress (ANC) party will not retain parliamentary majority.
Should that happen it would be the first time since 1994, that the ANC won’t hold majority in parliament.
