Senegalโ€™s President Macky Sall has rejected criticisms over his role in the countryโ€™s delayed presidential election that sparked chaos.

The election was to have been held last month but was postponed by Sall who cited a potential chaos after some candidates were excluded from the race.

The countryโ€™s parliament subsequently decided to reschedule the election to December, extending President Sallโ€™s mandate beyond April 2.

But Senegalโ€™s top court ruled that, the proposal to hold the vote after Sallโ€™s mandate expires on April 2 was unconstitutional.

The election would now take place on Sunday but Macky Sall told the BBC he canโ€™t be blamed for the crisis.

โ€œAll the actions that have been taken have been within the framework of the law and rules,โ€ he said.

Since gaining independence in 1960, Senegal hasnโ€™t experienced a delayed presidential election.

Sallโ€™s decision to delay the poll sparked criticisms across Africa with concerns it could plunge Senegal into democratic crisis.

The Constitutional Council ruled that an earlier proposal from a national dialogue commission for the vote to be held on June 2 was not in line with the constitution.

โ€œNo legal or judicial institution has questioned or cast any doubt on the sincerity of actions that were takenโ€, Sall claimed.

Sundayโ€™s election would have 18 candidates with the ruling coalition picking Amadou Ba, 62, a former prime minister and finance minister as its candidate.
