The President of The Gambia Adama Barrow has announced his intention to roll out reforms in the country’s prisons system.

Such reforms will ensure that the rights of Gambians are respected even if they are found guilty of crimes.

Under the new reforms signaled by Mr. Barrow, there are plans to build new prisons that are of international standards.

The Gambia, under former leader Yahya Jammeh was guilty of human rights violations with many political prisoners detained in inhumane conditions in prisons.

There have been several disappearances during Mr. Jammeh’s era with freedom of speech restricted.

Mr. Barrow’s Minister of the Interior, Mai Fatty has already visited some detention centres in the country prison. The Point reported that he described “the conditions in the prisons are very poor”.
