A court in Nigeria has directed that the country’s Agency for Food, Drug Administration and Control should ensure that the Nigeria Bottling Company Plc warns consumers in the country against taking soft drinks with Vitamin C.
The Nigeria Bottling Company Plc manufactures Fanta and Sprite soft drinks.
Local media reported that the Lagos High Court judge, Justice Adedayo Oyebanji gave the directive after a businessman Fijabi Adebo filed a case at the court.
Fijabi Adebo started the court action in 2008 and his lawyers told the court that he bought large quantities of Fanta and Sprite products from the Nigeria Bottling Company only for them to become poisonous when mixed with Vitamin C.
The products were meant to be exported to the UK.
Lawyers of the Nigeria Bottling Company in defense said quality control procedures are in place to ensure that products of the company are safe for consumption.
The company said chemical components in its soft drinks were safe for consumption in Nigeria.
But the Justice Oyebanji ruled that “The court is in absolute agreement with the learned counsel for the claimants that soft drinks manufactured by Nigeria Bottling Company ought to be fit for human consumption irrespective of colour or creed,”.
