An Indian commercial ship has been hijacked by Pirates off the coast of Somalia. A former government anti-piracy official told Reuters on Monday that the vessel is heading towards the shore.
Reuters quoted Abdirizak Mohamed Dirir, a former director of the anti-piracy agency in Somalia as saying “We understand Somali pirates hijacked a commercial Indian ship and (it is heading) towards Somalia shores”.
Mohamed Dirir works with the anti-piracy agency in Somalia’s semi-autonomous Puntland region.
Puntland’s deputy Minister for ports, Mohammud Gabbah also confirmed the hijacking to the BBC Somali service.
Indian media also reported that 11 people were on board the vessel, hijacked last Saturday.
Pirates last month hijacked a vessel, the first since 2012.
