Namibia’s President Hage Geingob has been selected by his ruling party SWAPO as its president. His party made the announcement of his election on Monday saying the votes were held over the weekend.

Geingob has been serving as president of Namibia since 2015 but was acting as president of his ruling party. Reuters reported that Geingob won 574 out of 766 votes at the elective congress, quoting Sisa Namandje, a lawyer who presided over the voting as making the confirmation.

President Hage Geingob in April this year praised Zimbabwe’s former president Robert Mugabe describing him as an African icon.

Geingboh applauded the southern African nation’s controversial land reform programme, saying the land question was an “emotive issue among many other African countries”.

“When we talk about land issue, long time ago in my thesis, I said that Zimbabwe is delivering a child through caesarean section, it might be painful at that moment but after a while the baby will have been born. Whereas we [Namibians] are trying to expect the child to be delivered through the normal nine month and now nine months have become 27 years,” Geingob was quoted as saying.

The Namibian academic-turned-president, however, warned that exclusive economic processes and policies had a tendency of breeding conflict and disaster.
